06 Feb 40 + 1: The First Graduating Class of Kisaruni Girls Secondary School

Imagine. Growing up in a culture where you, as a girl as young as 10, may be forced to marry a significantly older man and become a mother.

Many young girls aren’t able to complete even a primary education and have no choice but to become wives and mothers before their bodies are even ready to bear children. Many die during childbirth.

If you grew up in Maasai Mara region of African, this is simply a way of life.

The only hope these young girls have to escape this sentence and “way of life” that the vast majority of women in this village have known for generations – is to receive an education.

And that’s why, in the summer of 2010, The Unstoppable Foundation began funding the much-anticipated Kisaruni Girls Secondary School – the first and only boarding school for girls in the entire Maasai Mara region.

The moment Susan learned of the opening of Kisaruni Girls Secondary School, she was determined to do whatever she could to become one of the lucky 40 girls selected that first school year.  She dedicated extra time and effort to her studies, despite her numerous responsibilities at home.

“I studied hard in primary school and was at the top of all of my classes. I was confident and hopeful. I applied to Kisaruni and waited eagerly for the response. The last day of primary school, my heart was pounding because I knew I’d get the news of my future that day.”

“When my teacher told me that I had not been accepted to Kisaruni, it might as well have been a death sentence. I knew I had just been condemned to a life of poverty in my village.”

But as we mentioned, Susan was determined.

When the next school year began, Susan did the unimaginable. Alone, she walked for miles on the dusty path to Kisaruni to speak to the principal directly. She needed to hear first-hand that she had not been accepted, because she simply couldn’t allow herself to believe it … to give up on her dream.

When she arrived, the principal gently explained that they only had room for 40 girls, 40 beds, 40 desks and 40 chairs.

Susan was not one of them.

Devastated, she turned to leave, tears rolling down her cheeks.

Suddenly, 40 girls surrounded her in a circle of protection.  One shouted, “Please don’t make her go away.  We’ll move our beds together.” Another pleaded, I’ll share my desk with her.”  Yet another implored, “I’ll share my books with her.  Please don’t make her go away!”

And Susan’s life changed, right there, on the spot.

The girls’ love and support opened the door to her receiving an education, but the generosity of the Unstoppable Foundation and the person who paid her tuition made it possible for her to STAY in school, and become the 41st girl at Kisaruni Secondary School.

And now, 4 years later, Susan is one of the first-ever all-girls graduating class!
