09 Sep Gushing for Joy in Eor Ewuaso…

Kenya Journal – Welcome to Eor Ewuaso – Our Third of 11 Unstoppable Communities.

As we approached the village of Eor Ewuaso, pure excitement emanated from the children. They literally jumped into our arms as we approached the school grounds and were eager to show us their newest project–A BOREHOLE WELL!

The community-wide water project for Eor Ewuaso was completed this year with the construction of a borehole well and the positive impact was palpable. The children could not wait to show us the new water spigots on the school grounds as they gushed with clean, fresh water!

This new borehole well is now providing the entire community of Eor Ewuaso with clean water that is supporting nearly 1,500 people. The impact of this new water source cannot be overstated.

  • Girls no longer have to spend hours each day hauling contaminated water from a dirty river, enabling them to stay in school;
  • Hand-washing stations have been constructed throughout the school to help prevent the spread of germs between students;
  • Agriculture is now flourishing in Eor Ewuaso. The school garden is currently growing papayas, passion fruit and kale. Most recently, students harvested some of the kale and sold it to the local community for 1,200 Kenyan shillings. With that money, they school was able to purchase maize seeds for planting;
  • Students have also been learning agroforestry techniques where trees are grown in rows between food crops, encouraging reforestation and providing added nutrients to the soil. Each student has been assigned a section of the garden to look after and weed. The student with the best-looking section will win a prize, so the competition is getting fierce!

Eor Ewuaso And finally, hundreds of families now have the chance to pay for “private water connections” which will pipe water directly to their homes. This is one of the first communities in the entire region to have the possibility of running water in homes!

Recently, interviews were conducted with several community members to talk about how they’ve benefited from the new borehole.

Here’s just a few of their comments:

“We never thought it was possible to have water in the dry season. To have clean water all year round feels like a miracle!”

“We are so grateful that we no longer have to travel long distances for water. Now, we can focus on producing large crops and providing plenty of food for our families all year long!”
