COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT | OVERVIEW | KENYA
IN-COUNTRY PARTNER | FREE THE CHILDREN
THE UNSTOPPABLE FOUNDATION HAS FUNDED 17 SCHOOLS IN KENYA AND IS SUPPORTING 6 COMMUNITIES—all located around one of Africa's most treasured wildlife reserves. Each year, thousands of international tourists flock to the Maasai Mara National Reserve in hopes of catching a glimpse of “The Big Five”—rhinos, buffalos, lions, elephants and leopards. Yet the people of the Maasai Mara who live beside these luxury resorts struggle to find clean water and afford the cost of sending their children to primary school.
Community ownership is the basis of all sustainable development. In this spirit, our partnership with Free the Children collaborates with community members on each step of the process, empowering them to lead their own development. This participatory approach allows us to be actively engaged as stakeholder not only in individual projects, but the community itself.
In recent months, the Unstoppable Foundation has celebrated many successes in Kenya, including participation in the opening of the Baraka Health Clinic and the Kisaruni Girls Secondary School. The Unstoppable Foundation has continued to provide funding to Free the Children to help build primary schools, provide clean water sources and medical services to communities at-large, as well as to engage hundreds of mothers in beekeeping, beading programs and other income-producing businesses. And on top of all that, we are excited to announce in 2011 we began to work with three new communities and committed to fund the construction of the first boy's secondary school in the area beginning in 2012.
