14 Oct This Injustice Must Stop – Girls have a Right to Learn

The students stood staring at Susan — stunned — when they saw tears fall from her face. The principal told her she could not attend school.

Susan had a dream — to get an education, become a doctor, and help lift her village from poverty.

girls right to learnBut Susan was the 41st girl, and the school in her village only had room for 40 girls, 40 desks, 40 chairs.

Each girl could see herself in Susan. They knew the fate that awaited them if they didn’t get the chance to go to school. Without an education, Susan would become like the others — the “unlucky” ones — girls with no future, no voice, no chance to escape a life of backbreaking poverty. An arranged marriage to a man 3 to 4 times her age and giving birth to a child while she herself was still a child was all she could expect.

The girls huddled together and cried, “Please, we’ll make room for her; we’ll move our desks closer together, we’ll share our books. Please let Susan stay.”

There was nothing those 40 girls wouldn’t do to make sure that Susan, the 41st girl, had the same chance they did.

But what about the 42nd girl? Susan’s classmates can’t help all of the girls that are eager and ready to learn.

You can help the 42nd girl who is right now waiting for her chance to go to school.
Every child has A Right to Learn and in honor of International Day of the Girl, we want to help 1,000 more girls, just like Susan, get that chance!
