LAILA IMPACT REPORT - YEAR 4 PROGRESS

Below is a snapshot of the transformation that is occurring in the Laila community because of your support.

BEFORE Sponsor A Village:
  • Dilapidated, overcrowded and unsafe classrooms
  • Lack of trained educators

AFTER Sponsor A Village:
  • 14 newly constructed and renovated classrooms, all fully outfitted with furnishings and textbooks
  • 1 library completed
  • Construction of a properly-ventilated kitchen complete
  • 2 additional houses added to teacher accommodation block, improving teaching capacity for staff who previously had to walk up to five miles to get to school
  • Community members have facilitated repair and upkeep of school facilities and successfully applied for government funding to support 7th and 8th grade boarding program

  • Households have no access to clean water
  • Sorely inadequate latrines & handwashing stations
  • Communicable diseases are rampant due to contaminated drinking water & poor hygiene
  • Women & girls spend 6-8 hours a day collecting water

AFTER Sponsor A Village:
  • 6 latrine blocks completed; dedicated latrine blocks for boys, girls and teachers increase school attendance, particularly among girls
  • 3 new hand-washing stations on school campus support increased hygiene
  • Solar-powered spring in the center of the community provides easy access to clean, fresh water for all community members
  • Clean water kiosk at the school provides water for the entire community
  • Training held with 42 community women on clean water storage, to reduce contamination and disease transmission

  • Malnutrition from insufficient diet
  • Children don’t regularly attend school due to hunger and illness

  • More than 150,00 cups of high-nutrition porridge served to 584 students each year
  • Harvests from 2-acre school farm sustainably support school nutrition program

  • Community garden will be planted in 2019 to provide additional food, supporting broader community nutrition and generating alternative income from surplus harvests

  • Health education non-existent
  • Highest childhood mortality rate in entire region

AFTER Sponsor A Village:
  • Students and community members receive monthly access to mobile health clinics
  • All students and children in surrounding communities receive regular de-worming treatment and health screenings
  • Community members have access to subsidized, low-cost care at Baraka Hospital
  • Medical staff conducted community trainings on ways to reduce household smoke from open fires, pit latrine construction, clean water access and diet supplementation

BEFORE Sponsor A Village:
  • Insufficient income for parents to support their families resulting in extreme poverty
  • 80% of community holds debt for food purchases, school and health-related costs
  • Many community members live on less than $2 a day

AFTER Sponsor A Village:
  • Eight opportunity groups active in community: 4 women’s groups, 3 youth how to spot fake nike dunks groups and 1 men’s group
  • Women’s group have purchased sheep and goats, and leased 2.5 acres of farmland
  • Bee-keeping successfully reintroduced following community training on best-practices; men’s group harvested 1.2 liters of honey from their apiary and have sourced a market for their honey
  • Men’s group sold 28 sheep and distributed the money to members in the form of loans; remaining profits were put into group savings
  • Established Village Savings and Loan Associations (VLSAs) continue to hold sessions and run funding projects throughout the year
  • 114 community members attended financial literacy trainings on asset management, budgeting and banking
