After visiting Becky Primary School, we traveled to Elwou Orphanage—the other educational facility in Liberia supported by the Unstoppable Foundation. The Elwou Orphanage takes care of and educates 95 orphans in Monrovia, Liberia. The living conditions are deplorable. The living conditions are deplorable. There are no glass panes in their windows, their hole-ridden roof is in danger of collapse, and damaged pipes obstruct their only means of safe drinking water.
The students must grapple for limited resources in their school, which consists of one room, one bench, and one chalk board. There are six dedicated teachers working for the meager salary of only $48 annually, without even the necessary supplies to serve their children in these overcrowded classrooms.
In partnership with Youth Action International, our Unstoppable® help gives these orphans—and other students in the surrounding city—access to better facilities, more nutritious food, and clean drinking water. They’ve broken ground on a new school structure and the latrine is completed.
At Elwou we met Evelyn, a teacher at the school, who is herself an orphan. She told us how she felt called to this work and was drawn to these children because she also had no one to turn to while growing up. With tears in her eyes, she marveled at the new latrine saying, “What was once just a hole in the ground with some tinfoil around it is now the first nice toilet these children have ever seen.” Even for something that might seem minor to us, Evelyn is deeply grateful.
While progress is being made, the Elwou Orphanage still needs a lot of work!
